Wireless locking system

The problem

Problem solver: Dynapac Compaction Equipment AB

The project was in collaboration with Dynapac, which has had various problems with its current locks. Problems range from various types of theft and sabotage to locking systems that stop working due to the dirty work environment the machines work in. From there, Dynapac wanted to review any wireless solutions for their machines today.

Process

Initiation

The group started by identifying the problem, the customer and customer requirements. A plan was also set up so that the project would be kept within its time frame. Some tools that have been used to identify stakeholders and their needs are Stakeholder power / interest analysis and personas.

Inspiration

In the inspiration phase, benchmarking of existing products / solutions to the problem was done. Here, the Benefit-Expenditure matrix was used to see the usability versus the cost of the solution. To further work with this, a Value Strategy Canvas was made to get a more detailed view of the solutions.

And

To gather more statements about the problem, both workers and managers at Dynapac were interviewed. These were analyzed and shortened to clear "needs". The needs were then ranked in significance / importance.

Ideation

Based on the collected information, the group began to brainstorm ideas. Various brainstorming tools were used to create a quantitative repository of ideas.

A pugh matrix was used to develop the most promising solution. Various variables such as price, strength and safety were checked. Here it was clear that the bluetooth solution was the winner.

Implementation

Different types of prototypes were made in the project. One of these was the "lego lock" which demonstrated how the lock function could possibly work.

And

The final prototype consisted of a 3D-printed model of the drawer on a roller. With the help of an Arduino, the doors could be opened and locked with the help of an associated app. A failure mode and effect analysis and a Total cost of ownership were roughly put together for the solution.
